The infrastructure built to accommodate that 2012 Worlds turned Charlotte into one of the nation and world's top disc golf destinations and has also helped more and more people in the region discover and enjoy the sport over the years.
Whether the legend is true or not, there’s no doubting that the Charlotte disc golf community has grown the sport with all the buzzing energy of an insect swarm. The quality of these courses is attested to by how many high-caliber pro disc golfers – e.g. Jeremy "Big Jerm" Koling, Kevin Jones, Paul Ulibarri, Holly Finley, Michael Johansen, and Paige Shue – currently call the area home.

No matter where you live in the Queen City, a disc golf course is probably not far from you. Good courses for beginners include Renske, Reedy Creek, Eager Beaver, and Bailey Road. Some of the best pro-level courses include Renaissance, R.L. Smith, Hornets Nest, Nevin, and Bradford. All of the courses located on public parks are free to play, so you just need a couple of discs (no more than 2-3 for beginners).
Fueled by an accessibility that denies no one on the basis of age, gender, color, affluence or creed, plus a rise in professional marquee name players, disc golf has become one of the fastest growing sports in the U.S. Just off of Tyvola and South Tryon, you can find a golf course whose name is greeted with respect and reverence by top players around the world. Travel further north to the Beatties Ford Road area for a course that is thought of as one of the best in the world and hosted one of the game’s greatest players at a world championship round in 2012. Finally, take a 30-minute drive south from the center of the city to step foot on the home of the sport’s most prestigious title, held annually on a picturesque course for 17 straight years. After battling the hills and woods of Charlotte’s courses, there’s little better than a good meal and – for those who partake – a good beer. There are many awesome craft breweries, but two that regularly support disc golf are Lenny Boy Brewing Company and Olde Mecklenburg.
Kilborne District Park
Another great Cornelius course that’s just outside the downtown area is Bailey Road Park. Not quite as tough as Robbins Park, Bailey Road Park is an excellent spot for rounds with family and for honing your skills. We currently have stores in Charlotte, North Carolina and Denver, Colorado but have imminent plans for new locations.
This pro-level course has enough open spaces to help you lower your score and narrower wooded spots to challenge your skills, making it a highly-rated destination for local players. Charlotte’s history with disc golf began in the late 1980’s when the 18-hole course at Reedy Creek Park was built in the University area. The city steadily gained traction in the sport with the additions of Kilborne (1996), Hornets Nest (1996), and Renaissance Gold (1998). However, it wasn’t until Charlotte was selected to host the 2012 World Championships that disc golf caught fire in the Queen City. Seven new courses appeared in the three years leading up to the tournament, and today there are 30 courses of 18 holes or more within a 25 mile radius of Uptown with several private courses in the area as well.
Sitting on 20 acres of manicured hills and wooded forest areas, Torma Town has every challenge you expect from a great course. That includes water hazards, challenging rough and large, open areas fit for long drives. Admission is $5 for a day of play and yearly memberships are available for purchase. For a disc golf experience that’s right in the heart of nature, head to Robbins Park in Cornelius. During your round, you’ll head through a mature forest out to open fields that used to be farmland, around a stream that’s largely in-play, and go up and down as the elevation changes with the terrain. The park also has one of Lake Norman’s largest milkweed plant populations, so expect to see Monarch butterflies flying around while you go about your visit.
There's also an excellent sandwich shop right next to Another Round Disc Golf called NoDa Bodega, and shop visitors are welcome to pick up food there and enjoy it in Another Round with a local craft beer. Olde Mecklenburg (OMB) is the oldest craft brewery in Charlotte, and it makes standard German styles. OMB's Copper – which is based on the Altbier style found almost exclusively near the German city Düsseldorf – has been a staple on Charlotte-area beer lists for a long time now. The beers aren't as adventurous as Lenny Boy's, but the menu is more extensive. There's German-inspired fare as well as burgers, a pulled pork sandwich, and more.

It has lagers and ales dark and light, some straightforward traditional European styles and some familiar recipes with modern twists. If there was a disc golf equivalent of Georgia’s famed Augusta, it’s the Winthrop University Golf Course. Designed by Harold Duvall and Dave Dunipace, the course opened in 1992 after years of planning and a long deliberation process with players and spectators for the best experience. The result of their hard work is a championship-level course with spectacular views and iconic holes, just like Augusta. It’s hosted the US Disc Golf Championship since 1999 and is known for being physically, emotionally and mentally challenging. Winthrop’s course is open to the public, so if you’re not intimidated by long holes, lots of water, narrow fairways and amble out-of-bounds areas, this legendary course is well worth your time.

Whether hitting one of Charlotte’s many courses or grabbing gear and a beer from Another Round’s flagship location, it’s easy to see why Charlotte is a destination for all things disc golf. The goal, just as in traditional golf, is to hole out (or throw the disc into the basket) in as few throws (strokes) as possible. Everything else, from the shaping of different shots, to the consideration of the elements, to the burning mental anguish when you miss an easy putt is as real as anything you’ve ever felt on the links.
Another Round Disc Golf is Charlotte's most popular dedicated disc golf shop. Located in the hip NoDa district, Another Round is not only fully stocked with gear but also has rotating taps pouring craft beer from some of Charlotte's many excellent craft breweries. You also won't go wrong hitting a Play It Again Sports, a franchise that sponsors many events in the area. The shops in and near Charlotte often carry plenty of discs and tend to have staff who know a thing or two about the sport. Another Round isn't the only business mixing disc golf retail with another draw.
